Government to oppose ICAO's MBM scheme

New Delhi, Sep 28 (AZINS) The government on Wednesday said it will not agree to the proposed Global Market-based Measure (MBM) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to limit civil aviation sector's carbon emissions.

The announcement was made by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar after the Union Cabinet met here.

The minister said the Union Cabinet has approved India's position on ICAO's draft MBM and that the government will not join the proposed scheme.

"There is an attempt to cap emissions in civil aviation by 2020," Javadekar said at a media briefing after the Union Cabinet's meeting.

"We have said that for the developing world, the proposal is unfair. A cap by 2020 will be injustice."

Currently, the proposed scheme is being discussed at the ICAO's 39th assembly in Montreal.

According to a government spokesperson: "Cabinet approval will enable finalisation of negotiation strategy in 39th Assembly of ICAO."

"This will help India to bargain for the possible flexibility out of the proposed Global Market Based Measures scheme."
