EXCLUSIVE - Kunal Kemmu is my Rahul Dravid: 'Malang' director Mohit Suri
Director Mohit Suri is currently riding on the success of his latest film, Malang. For the film, he brought a different set of actors together and created beautiful magic on the big screen. Malang has Anil Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu, Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani in the lead roles. This is the second time Mohit worked with Aditya after Aashiqui 2 and first outing with both Anil and Disha. Interestingly, Kunal starred in Suri's film after 15 long years as they worked together in Kalyug released in 2005.

During an Exclusive interview with DNA Online, Mohit was all praises for his lead cast of Malang and also spoke about how his second directorial, Kalyug was way ahead of its time. Suri also shared if he will ever create digital content.

Excerpts...

People are talking about Malang being in the league of Ek Villain but I thought it was more of Zeher's league. Do you agree?

Yeah, it was more of Murder 2's line. It was a thriller with more of a twist and turn kind of a film.

Did you expect this kind of amazing response from the masses?

Yes, plus I also got feedback from people who normally don't respond to my films. People from abroad are commenting on my films. We all went outside our comfort zone, I have done it in the past. But never with the actors who don't know me. At that time, Emraan (Hashmi), Shamita (Shetty) and Udita (Goswami) were very new. So this is relatively a known cast but even with that Aditya is not known for doing thrillers or actions. Kunal has done it with me in Kalyug but you probably seem him doing comedy. Anil sir has not done this for very long, off late he has been seen as some actor's father or brother, uncle something like that.

So all of us were taken out of our comfort zone for this film. Luv also being a producer never made a film like that. What was good that we all on the set were trying to do something that was challenging. When it pays off like this, it makes me happy. We went all out with our beliefs. Now that it's being appreciated by people, all the actors have been getting calls and people say, 'You surprised us. You shocked us around'. So, I am happy with this.

Were these actors were always your first choice for the film?

Aditya became a part when we were writing the film. He came to me and had said 'I want to do something more, I need to change what I'm doing'. I could see a side of him in which I knew he could play an action hero rather than the love boy he has been playing for all these years. Kunal was the second one who came on board, Michael's role was so twisted. There was a thin line where people would find it funny and laugh at it if the performance was not convincing. People won't realise how difficult that role is, we did not go over the top, didn't go under also and make it believable. I had launched Kunal 15 years ago with Kalyug and I must say he is one of the best male actors I have ever worked with. We were going in for a tough situation on a pitch which is bad, then we have Mr Rahul Dravid come and performing. So, he is like my Rahul Dravid, who come and deliver the situation. He would hold the fort well. The last was the brilliant cast which was suggested by Luv Ranjan. We went to Anil sir for the role. When you know the energy that was there in the film with the songs which were high level, Mr Anil Kapoor is energy in himself who could keep the madness going on. When we cast him, we got the whole film together and a different perspective altogether.

What was Kunal's reaction when you explained the whole character of Michael to him?

We did a film like Kalyug 15 years back where the character played by Nisha Lalwani was a lesbian, her mother was Amrita Singh. There were transvestites on the streets of Amsterdam. I have done that in 2005 and it was way ahead of its time. Now when I see stuff like that on web series, I realise that people are watching something like that now which did 15 years back. The thing is the budget was limited at that time unlike now.

So, Kunal has been telling me since give me something, man. When I gave the character to him, he was super happy with it. He always thought that when we do something together, we should do something madder. That's why he did this film.

What took you so long to cast Kunal in a film? Didn't you find anything suitable for him earlier?

I had offered him and I don't feel dejected when my actors don't do a role I give them. The kind of films I made, he didn't like the roles and I didn't think it was right for him. There was a serious film where there was a particular role and I wanted him to be there. But the role didn't end up good, so, I felt it's better, he doesn't do it. We kind of tried to work a couple of times together, but things were not falling into place.

How different was it working with Aditya Roy Kapur after Aashiqui 2?

He has matured a lot, Aashiqui 2 time he was too new. But then again he was given a subject of which he had no experience about which was action, not the intensity part. He had to be intense with action not that he was enjoying or having fun. He again felt like a newcomer.

How do you shift between genres of your film like from romantic to thriller?

I think I feel like doing action or thriller film after some time. The film that we are making is like a relationship that is going to be for the next year. The minute it loses its path and it's the same thing you have done in previous films or is repetitive, it tends to have a diminishing effect. I try to keep challenging myself and how do I make it more. Monotony is the saddest part of my life, films are the only thing I experiment with. I don't do anything else. I only make movies, I don't party and I am not a big foodie also.

Why did you choose Goa as the location for the film?

When we were young, we used to go to Goa for Christmas and New Years to party. I had earlier gone for a bachelor party of one of my cousins to Goa and a saw a young couple on a bike. The boy was without a shirt and the girl was sitting behind and they were riding at Anjuna. My cousin had then asked me, 'Would you allow your daughter to come like this?' I remember telling him that it's not the boyfriend part I am worried about, it's the worry about how did we get past this age. We were unbeatable, so, it's just that my personal life was connected to Goa. It was not because of what is said, the kind of substance abuse that happens, happens everywhere. It happens in Mumbai, Delhi and also other parts of the country and abroad too. I connected to Goa with Christmas and New Years holidays that we used to have. Surprisingly, both Adi and I were in Goa at that time, so it was connected to that.

It's been 15 years since you started your journey as a film director. So, how would you describe your journey till now?

I never looked back and looked forward ever. I'm just happy and it suddenly hit me that my first movie came back 15 years ago, when Kunal came and told me. I feel great and I just feel like I have started yesterday. I don't know where I am going, but what I know for sure is I have been on the sets since I was 17-18. I am 28 today, I was first an assistant and then a director. I have been doing it for 15 years, I love being on the sets. I have made 12 films till now and I can continue making films like this till the rest of my life.

When will we see you directing Emraan Hashmi again in a film?

Very soon! I'm dying to work with Emraan. Besides being my lead actor, who gave me a break, he is also my brother. So, I have to find a role that is good enough for him.

Have you finalised female lead for Ek Villain 2?

So far only John Abraham and Aditya Roy Kapur have been finalised. I have to finalise my girls because they always have substantial roles in my films. Especially in Ek Villain, I need someone very important and I will be casting soon.

In this age of digital content, so are you keen on venturing into that too?

I would love to. Some people say that between films do one web show till we get the next actors dates. I don't want to do web series that way. The way I look at web series is a platform where the language is not a barrier and where we can compete with an international audience. I think some series like Jamtara, the first season of Sacred Games and Mirzapur are really good and can function on an international level.
