Oscars 2021 postponed by two months amid coronavirus pandemic, will be conducted on April 25
The 93rd Oscars will be conducted on April 25 and have been postponed by eight weeks after the coronavirus pandemic shut down theatres and affected business, wreaked devastation on Hollywood's release calendar. The Academy confirmed the same on Monday. Reports state that many movies have been forced to push their release, waiting for the theatres to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic. The cut-off date for Oscar-eligible films has also been extended from December 31, 2020, to February 28, 2021.

David Rubin and Dawn Hudson, Academy president, and CEO respectively, said in a statement, "Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control."

For the uninformed, before the coronavirus pandemic happened, this year's Academy Awards was one to remember as Joaquin Phoenix won his first Oscar for his performance as an isolated loner who becomes one of the world’s best known comic book villains in Joker. Joaquin won his oscar after previously being nominated three times.

In his speech, Joaquin also invoked his late brother and said, "I’ve been a scoundrel in my life, I’ve been selfish, I’ve been cruel at times, I’ve been hard to work with. I’m grateful so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said: Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow," concluding his speech tearfully to a standing ovation.
