Happy New Year everyone!
Happy New Year everyone!

With New Year comes new hope and that is why we all celebrate the arrival of New Year with enthusiasm and happiness. We are already into the New Year 2012 and surely you all had a blast celebrating the arrival of 2012. Arrival of New Year is also an opportune moment for assessment as to what we all achieved and what remains to be achieved in the New Year and then the planning follows.

We also look back and try to remember the notable events that took place in the last year. Here is an attempt to collect some of the 2011 events from the desk of AZ India for all our readers:

Cricket World Cup Victory: After 1983, Indians entered into each world cup edition with the hope that men in blue would lift the world cup but every time the dreams were shattered and hearts broken, sometimes ruthlessly and sometime by a whisker. Dhoni’s magical SIX off Kulasekra remains as the best picture of 2011, at least for all cricket fanatics.

India against Corruption: In the political and social circle of India, 2011 will be most remembered as Anna’s massive movement against corruption. For a country which is divided by region, religion, caste, languages etc., nobody had ever thought that the fight against rampant corruption would ultimately help them unite. It probably needed someone to show them the path and it happened to be a 74 year old dhoti clad man by no chance yet again. Meanwhile the Jan-Lokpal vs Jokepal debate is still on.

RIP Golden Stars: 2011 would also be sadly remembered for we lost more than a dozen of amazing talents in this year. Our youngest captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Junglee Fame Shammi Kapoor, Ghajal King Jagjit Singh, Ever Green Dev Anand, Bhupen Hazarika, Film Producer Surinder Kapoor, painter M.F. Hussain, Sathya Sai Baba, Actor Bob Christo, Actor Navin Nishcol, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi would be some from that list.

Census 2011: No longer we can say a country with billion hopes, just because we now are well over one billion. The massive task of 2011 census was finished and the data shows that we are now little over 1.21 billion a growth rate of 17.64% in the last decade.

Apple Became JobLess: Apple Inc lost its most iconic man, Steve Jobs to Cancer.

From AAA to AA+ rating: Standard & Poor’s lowered United States of America Long-Term Rating To 'AA+' from AAA due to political risks, rising Debt Burden and negative Outlook Negative. The United States parted company with its respected AAA credit rating for the first time in seven decades after being downgraded by Standard & Poor's.

The end of Muammar Gaddafi, Osama bin laden and Hosni Mubarak:
So many political changes. Osama Bin laden was nailed by American forces finally. Gaddafi, the official ruler of Libyan Arab republic from 1969 and then the "Brother Leader" of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya from 1977 to 2011, was captured and then killed by Libyan forces following a civil war in Libya. Hosni Mubarak, the 4th president of Egypt from 1981 to 2011 was finally ousted after 18 days of demonstrations in 2011 known as Egyptian revolution.

Last US troops leave Iraq, ending war: The last convoy of U.S. soldiers pulled out of Iraq towards the end of the year, ending nearly nine years of war that cost almost 4,500 American and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives, and left a country grappling with political uncertainty.

Tainted Ministers sent to Jail: It seldom happens that an Indian Government minister facing charges of corruption goes to Jail. But 2011 saw some prominent ministers accused in various scams, behind the bars in Tihar Jail. As the cliché goes – they have been sent to jail and nothing more has happened yet. 2011 once again proved be a year of scams – 2-G Scam, CWG Scam, Adarsh Society scam to name a few.

First 3-D Hindi Movie in Arizona: December 24th witnessed the screening of a 3-D Hindi movie for the first time in Arizona. No prizes to guess the movie name though. It was DON-2.

So these were the picks from AZ India for 2011. Surely there could be many more that can be added to this list.

Here is wishing a very Happy New Year to all of you once again and we do hope that we would celebrate the arrival of 2013 in much the same way despite 2012 being projected as the end of the world by some faithful of Mayan Calendar.
