Hero (Hindi Movie)
Starring :  Sooraj Pancholi, Athiya Shetty, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sharad Kelkar, Aditya Pancholi, Anita Hassanandani

Producer : Salman Khan, Subhash Ghai

Director : Nikhil Advani

Music : Amaal Mallik, Meet Bros. Anjjan, Sachin-Jigar

Review by : Kriti Agarwal

Rating : 2 out of 5

What's about :  An ineffective remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1980's superhit film Hero, in which Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Seshadri played the lead roles. A launch film has a huge burden on it of showcasing two young hopeful entrants. They have to show off their pretty faces, their toned and worked on bodies and also their acting skills.

Let us pat the debutants, Suraj and Athiya on their back, say “Well done, beta,” and leave feeling satisfied.

Location : Paris, Romania, Himachal Pradesh India.

Story :   After a carefully planned media campaign, Sooraj ( Sooraj) is a ‘gali ka goonda’. Radha (Athiya Shetty) is an ‘IG ki beti’. The twain meet, and love blossoms, sparks fly, songs happen and now the father of the girl is after the boy's life. They have eloped by now. Sooraj's godfather and jailed politician Pasha (Aditya Pancholi) has sworn to track the lovebirds down. It turns into a multi-cornered battle.

The fresh-faced ‘goonda’ and his faithful friends (another tired trope) effect the sloppiest ‘kidnap’.The rest of it entails the doings of Bad Guy Pasha (Aditya Pancholi), Radha’s father (Tigmanshu Dhiulia) bellowing at the top of his voice, her supportive brother (Kelkar) hovering in the background, and the fisticuffs and the songs stuffed in between.

The end brings relief, with Sallu Bhai exuding more star power in two minutes  'Main Hoon Hero Tera', than we’ve seen in two hours.

Sooraj Pancholi does a headstand on a platform of nails, drives a bulldozer through a wall, slams dudes through solid objects, does a laser dance in a disco and swings Athiya Shetty (who takes three selfies within 15 seconds) around to knock out a giant baddie !!

Sooraj Pancholi does a Mithun Chakraborty. You have to watch it to believe it.

The reasons to watch Hero.

Characters : The lead pair successfully displayed their dancing skills.

Aditya Pancholi [ Pasha] : with his bearded look, lacks the aura of the underworld king pin Pasha. His deadpan dialogue delivery does not make him menacing at all.
Sooraj Pancholi [ Sooraj ] : has great-looking musculature, well-chiselled physique,  a voice with some timbre & he can fight well.
Athiya Shetty [ Radha ] : poised & confident, strikingly tall and rangy, has the potential and a lovely voice.
Tigmanshu Dhulia [ IG Shrikant Mathur] : can neither pull off the tough policeman routine, nor can he manage the role of the girl’s father – and the end result is comical.
Sharad Kelkar [ brother Dheeraj] : portrays the IG's son with aplomb, perfect as a  loving son and concerned older brother.
Vivan Bhatena [antagonist Prince Rannvijay Shekhawat]:small but well-defined and executed role. His impish, wicked demeanour explodes during the action scenes. makes his gym trainer proud.
Chetan Hansraj : quite impressivein a negative role.
Anita Hassanandani's over enthusiastic 'bhabhi',  & Suresh Menon's 'BBM' feature shallow characters.

Cons :  poor script, screenplay, direction & Editing. too many close-up shots. most of the scenes are superbly dramatic,  yet do not create an emotional impact.

Pros : fascinating Fight & Dance Choreography, excellent Cinematography,Technically advanced,

Music : background score is synchronised. ‘Main hoon Hero Tera’ repeated umpteen number of times.

Diluted plot :

1-Though the core storyline remained the same as original, alterations came across inadequate and incomplete.

2 - New Pasha [Aditya pancholi] was meek in contrast to the original dreaded Pasha [ Amrish Puri].

3 - The four friends of Sooraj were reduced to bunch of jokers.

4 - Sooraj’s confrontation with Radha’s father was a damp squib. This was nicely done by Jackie – “Maine sirf Radha ka haath maanga tha, Radha ki Bheek nahin”.

5 - Sharad Kelkar was underutilized. Sanjeev Kumar’s role (in original) was key to the plot but Sharad’s was left irrelevant.

6 - Vivan Bhatena did a wonderful job but his character failed to create an impact [ Shakti Kapoor in original}.

7 - The emotional quotient was missing throughout the movie and acting came across like an obligation, thus lacking resolve.

8-  The original film had a great story, hit songs, laced with abundant humour. new Hero is  bearable due to the performance by the lead cast.

Bottom line :   Watching Hero is like refreshing your Facebook timeline, hoping for a like or a comment. The movie  makes you realize that those Candy Crush invites are NOT the most irritating thing in the world.

However, watch Hero for the picturesque locations, cinematography and brilliant performances.
