Strong tremors felt across Delhi NCR, say media reports

Sep 9 (AZINS) Strong earthquake tremors were felt across Delhi NCR, news agency ANI said on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to this, Delhi NCR was jolted by moderate earthquake on July 1s. The epicenter of the July earthquake was in Haryana, the Met department had said. No loss of life or property was reported.

The tremors, lasting for a few seconds, were felt around 3.37 p.m.

According to the Centre for Seismology, an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Ritcher scale and epicentre at a point 28.9 degrees north latitude and 77 degrees East, in Haryana’s Sonepat district. At depth of 5 km, the earthquake was qualified as moderate.

The entire national capital region lies in very sensitive Seismic Zone 4. This means that any moderate to strong earthquake can have devastating impact on the area. Hence, Delhi NCR will feel strong tremors if any earthquake strikes in and around north India.

For example, strong tremors were felt in Delhi NCR on May 10 even when the epicenter of the earthquake was in far off Afghanistan. High-rise buildings in Guragon shook for a few seconds due to the 6.2 earthquake that hit the Afghanistan-Kazakhstan border.
