Mohammed Shami charged for dowry and sexual harassment by Kolkata police

Mar 14 (AZINS) Kolkata Police file chargesheet against Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his brother Hasib Ahmed at Alipore court today (14 March). In the chargesheet, Shami has been charged under sections 498A (dowry harassment) and 354A (sexual harassment).

Shami and his wife Hasin Jahan have had a long-standing case on after the latter came out with screenshots of his alleged affair on social media. The couple’s bitter spat came into limelight on 7 March last year; however, Shami had said that all this was a conspiracy to ruin his career.

Salim Rahman, Shami’s lawyer said that three allegations of rape (by Shami’s elder brother), attempt to murder and physical assault had been excluded in the chargesheet. “There are two charges of domestic violence and sexual abuse. We will take legal steps once the summons is issued against him,” he said.

Jahan had lodged a police case at the Kolkata police headquarters on 8 March 2018, accusing him and his family of torture, physical abuse and mental harassment. Shami, however, maintained that Jahan's accusations were baseless.

Shami’s wife had even accused him of match-fixing and taking money from a Pakistani girl named Alishba following which he was omitted from the central contracts list by the BCCI pending investigations.

However, after a complete investigation by BCCI, he was given a clean chit and they reinstated his central contract. According to the latest contracts, Shami has been given a Grade A contract (Rs 5 lakh).

In March 2018 itself, Jahan had also met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and handed her an appeal. After the meeting which lasted for about half an hour she had told media persons that the CM had assured all cooperation to ensure that justice prevailed.
