Nirbhaya gangrape case: Hangman Pawan Jallad awaits Jan 22, says rapists' hanging will bring great relief

Hangman Pawan Jallad, most likely to carry out the execution of the four Nirbhaya gangrape case convicts on January 22, jas said the hanging of rapists will "bring great relief to me, her parents and everybody else."

Pawan, a third generation hangman from Meerut, said the hanging will send out a strong message in the society.

"Hanging the Nirbhaya gangrape case convicts will certainly bring great relief to me, her parents and everybody else," he was quoted as saying by PTI.

"Those who were involved in this brutal incident must be hanged, which will send out a strong message in the society," he added.

23-year-old paramedic student Nirbhaya was gangraped and brutalised on a moving bus on December 16, 2012 before being dumped on the road. She was airlifted to Singapore where she died on December 29, 2012.

Six people, including a juvenile, were arrested for the crime. The juvenile was released after serving a three-year term at a juvenile home, one convict allegedly committed suicide in jail while four others - Mukesh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) - are set to be hanged on January 22.

A Delhi court issued death warrants against all the four convicts on Tuesday, ordering their execution on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail.

While Pawan has not officially received any communication regarding the hanging of the four men, he is hopeful that he will get the job.

"I do not have any information regarding the execution, nobody has spoken to me yet. If anyone approaches me, I am ready to do the job. Earlier, I was asked to be ready for the execution on December 16," he told reporters.

Earlier on Wednesday, a state minister said the government has received a letter from Tihar jail seeking services of the hangman.

"Tihar jail had written to avail the service of hangman from Meerut for the execution of Nirbhaya Rape case convicts. We have approved permission for the same," Jai Kumar Singh, Minister of State for jail, said.
