No American harmed in Iran's missile attack on US bases in Iraq: Donald Trump

No Americans were harmed in missile attack by Iran on two US bases in Iraq, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday.

Over a dozen missiles were launched in the early hours of Wednesday targeting at least two Iraqi military bases hosting US military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil, in Iraq. The strike was launched in retaliation to the killing of its top military commander Major General Qassem Soleimani.

Iranian state media said at least 80 "American terrorists" were killed in attacks on two US bases in Iraq. The report also said that none of the missiles were intercepted.

In a statement issued from the White House, hours after the missile strike Trump said, "No Americans were harmed in last night's attack by the Iranian regime. We suffered no casualties. All our soldiers are safe, only minimal damages were sustained at our military bases."

The US President claimed that Iran had been the leading sponsor of terrorism and their "pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens the civilized world."

Trump's statement means that the tension is unlikely to turn into a full-blown war in near future as Iran has also said that it does not want war.

As long as I am the President, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, Trump said.

He also warned of more sanctions against Iran.

"These powerful sanctions will remain until Iran changes its behaviour," Trump said.

Trump called on the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia and China to break off from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal - Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - from which the US has already withdrawn.
