A petition was filed at the Supreme Court on Monday against the blockage of the Kalindi Kunj road on account of the ongoing anti-CAA protests at Shaheen Bagh.

The petition was filed by a Delhi-based advocate and activist, Amit Sahni. In his petition, Sahni claimed that the earlier directive by the High Court in the matter did not succeed in delivering the relief sought by the petitioner since the HC had simply directed the Delhi Police to look into the grievances of the people without issuing any definitive orders to alleviate the problem.

Sahni highlighted that the daily commuters are facing great hassle while traversing the Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh stretch due to the blockage of the road that has witnessed a sit-in by protesters for more than 30 days now.

The petition urged the Supreme Court to take cognizance into the matter and issue specific directions for the removal of the blockage of the stretch of road due to the protests.

It also seeks for the situation to be monitored or supervised by a retired judge of the Supreme Court or the Delhi High Court in order to "circumvent any violence" that might arise out of the situation.

After a plea filed by Sahni earlier this month, the Delhi High Court had directed the police to review the restrictions that have been imposed along the road, keeping in mind the larger public interest as well as maintenance of law and order.

Following this, the Delhi Police on Friday appealed to protesters in South East Delhi's Shaheen Bagh area to clear the road.

"We appeal to agitators at Road No. 13 A Shaheen Bagh to understand the sufferings that the complete highway blockade is causing to residents of Delhi & NCR, Senior Citizens, emergency patients and school going children. The matter has also come up before the Hon'ble High Court," Delhi Police had said in a tweet. 

"We again urge protesters to cooperate and clear the road in larger public interest," the city police tweeted.

The Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh stretch of road no. 13 A in the national capital has been closed since December 15 last year after protesters occupied the road following the police action on Jamia Millia Islamia students on the campus.

The protest, led by women, has become an inspiration across the country with similar protests erupting in various cities as part of a larger movement against the CAA-NRC.  

The new law promises citizenship to members of 6 non-Muslim communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who entered India before December 31, 2014. Massive protests have erupted across the country against the new law.

Critics say that the new law is against the secular nature of the Indian Constitution and clubbed with the NRC may be misused to strip away some Muslims' citizenship in the country. The BJP, however, has argued that the law has nothing to do with India's Muslims and only helps those who fled religious persecution in the neighbouring countries.
