No unusual delay in announcement, 62.59% voter turnout in Delhi polls: Election Commission

The Election Commission on Sunday answered queries over the delay in providing the exact voting percentages of the Delhi Assembly Election 2020 and placed the final voter turnout figure at 62.59%.

"The final voter turnout was recorded at 62.59%," Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh said on this day. Notably, Delhi had recorded a voter turnout of 67.47% in the 2015 assembly polls.

He also answered the earlier queries by saying that there were no unusual delays in announcing the figure, as some had hinted, justifying the late announcement by saying that some returning officers were busy with the scrutiny of data throughout the night to ensure its accuracy.

Addressing a press conference, Singh tried to ally all the fears as expressed by a section of political parties over delay in releasing the final voting figures for the Delhi assembly elections held on Saturday, saying "they did not want to speculate and wanted to give exact figures".

"So, returning officers worked throughout the night to check data to ensure it is accurate," Singh said while asserting that the delay was not unusual rather it was done in a good time.

He said there were more than 13,700 polling stations in the national capital and they had to add data from each station and ensure that every vote is accounted for.

It is not matter of late or early as soon as the voting percentage was finalised, it was shared with the public, he said.

The Election Commission's remarks came after veteran leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Sanjay Singh, a day after the national capital voted for the Delhi Assembly Election 2020, expressed his doubts regarding potential malpractice before the poll results and questioned the EC in this regard.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal had also questioned the "delay" by the Election Commissioner in giving the final voter turnout figure for the assembly polls, and said it was suspicious and asked if the poll panel was waiting for the BJP office's nod.

Regarding the voting percentage, the EC CEO said there is a shortfall of five percentage with respect to the previous assembly elections.

He further informed that the highest voting of 71.6% was reported from the Ballimaran constituency, while the lowest turnout was in Delhi cantonment, which reported 45.4% polling.

Exit polls on Saturday predicted an easy win for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which sought to retain power on development plank, against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that ran an aggressive campaign centred around the issues of anti-CAA protests and nationalism.
