NZ vs IND: VVS Laxman raises concerns over poor form of Virat Kohli's 'go-to bowler'

Former Team India cricketer VVS Laxman has expressed his concerns with Jasprit Bumrah's recent form since coming back into the national side.

Bumrah had picked up the injury in September and did not play in the home series against South Africa, Bangladesh and West Indies.

The premier fast bowler, who was on the sidelines due to an injury for nearly three months, successfully made his return into the team during India's first T20I match of the series against Sri Lanka last month.

However, the star pacer's performances during the first two ODIs of the three-match series have been fairly poor. Bumrah went wicketless in both the matches, giving away 53 and 64 runs respectively during his 10-over spells as India ended up losing both the matches.

"It must be a cause for concern for India that Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli's go-to bowler whenever he has needed breakthroughs, has been short of wickets all tour."

"Additionally, his lengths too haven't been spot-on, which means he hasn't been able to impose usual pressure. Of course, New Zealand's batsmen have played him well, with Taylor in the forefront," Laxman wrote for Times of India in his column.

With the series already in the bag, New Zealand is set to take on India in the third and final ODI match at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on February 11.

"At the break, India must have fancied their chances of drawing level, but when you lose three wickets in the first ten overs, including Virat's, you are always playing catchup," Laxman wrote.

Tim Southee on Saturday (February 8) became the leading bowler in world cricket to have dismissed Virat Kohli in all three formats of the game. Southee so far has dismissed the Indian skipper nine times which includes 6 times in ODI cricket.

"Tim Southee's dismissal of Virat was an example of New Zealand's smartness in working out and sticking to game plans," VVS claimed.

The 31-year-old also tops the elite list of bowlers and surpassed England's James Anderson and Graeme Swann, who managed to send Kohli back to the dressing room eight times in international cricket.

"Even though he was physically suffering, Southee kept at it. He set Virat up with a series of away swingers, then brought one back in to sneak it through the gate, a fantastic piece of bowling," he added.
