COVID-19: AIIMS Delhi to curtail Operation Theatre services from April 10

In view of the rising cases of COVID-19, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi on Thursday (April 8) said that they will perform only urgent procedures and surgeries in the operation theatres with effect from April 10, 2021.

“It has been decided in a meeting chaired by Director, AIIMS today in the Ramalingaswamy Board Room that Operation Theatre services in AIIMS, New Delhi need to be curtailed in response to the heightened need for diversion of infrastructure, manpower and material resources for prevention and control of COVID-19 outbreak," a statement said.

"Accordingly, it is decided that only urgent procedures/ surgeries are to be taken up in various operation theatres of AIIMS with effect from 10.04.2021 (Saturday)," it added.

This decision comes as Delhi on Thursday reported nearly 7,500 coronavirus cases, the highest single-day spike this year. For two days in a row, the capital reported over 5,000 new infections.

With 7,437 fresh cases the cumulative total reached in the Delhi has reached 6,98,005 and with 24 deaths the death toll rose to 11,157. Currently, the number of active cases stands at 23,181.

On Tuesday (April 6), AIIMS had decided to temporarily stop routine walk-in OPD patient registrations from Thursday (April 8). Only those with prior appointments will be allowed, the hospital said.

Meanwhile, India on Thursday reported 1,26,789 fresh COVID-19 cases, pushing the total tally to 1,29,28,574, according to the health ministry bulletin.

The ministry added that the number of active cases also breached the nine lakh-mark once again.
