Fully-vaccinated people 50% less likely to suffer from long COVID, says UK study
The study led by King's College London says that while vaccines ensured that only a minority of people get COVID-19, it also halves the chances of an infection lasting more than four weeks, compared to unvaccinated people.
While most people recover from a COVID-19 infection in a month’s time, some people suffer from long-lasting symptoms that may continue for weeks or even months. Not just those with severe cases of illness, even mild COVID-19 cases can bring long COVID.
Published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, the research gathered data from a COVID study app in UK that tracks information on symptoms, testing and vaccination from people who self-report.
From data of around 1.2 million adults, only 0.2% of the fully-vaccinated people reported a Covid infection after vaccination.
Certain groups were at risk of breakthrough infections as per the research, particularly with people who had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Lead researcher Dr Claire Steves said, “In terms of the burden of long Covid, it is good news that our research has found that having a double vaccination significantly reduces the risk of both catching the virus and if you do, developing long-standing symptoms.”
