Saif Ali Khan stabbing case: Is accused Mohammad Shehzad a national-level wrestler? Here's what we knowSaif Ali Khan’s attacker, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, claimed to be a national-level wrestler in Bangladesh as per the latest reports. Shehzad reportedly revealed to police that he was a skilled wrestler, having competed at both district and national levels in Bangladesh, following his arrest in Thane on January 19.
Police suspect that his wrestling background enabled him to overpower Saif and others during the incident. According to reports, the accused allegedly crossed into India from Bangladesh without proper documentation and had been residing in Mumbai for several months before attacking the Bollywood actor in the wee hours at his Bandra residence on January 16.
It is being reported that Shehzad entered Saif's home, in the Satguru Sharan building in upscale Bandra with the intention of theft. When the actor tried to stop him, he attacked him with a knife, stabbed him and fled the scene. One of their house-helps was also injured in the process.
Following the violent assault, Shehzad allegedly went into hiding, traversing various Mumbai neighbourhoods, including Bandra, Dadar, Worli, Andheri, and Thane. However, his attempts to evade capture failed when police nabbed him near a labour camp in Thane. A Bandra court subsequently remanded him to five-day police custody.
Meanwhile, his defence lawyer contested the allegations, claiming that the Mumbai Police lacked evidence to prove Shehzad's Bangladeshi nationality. The lawyer claimed that Shehzad has been living in Mumbai for more than 7 years with his family.
A crucial phone transaction made by Shehzad allegedly aided the Mumbai Police in tracing his location, ultimately leading to his capture. Further investigation revealed that Shehzad had a prior involvement in a robbery incident a few months ago, while employed in Worli. He was accused of stealing a diamond ring, resulting in his termination from the job.
