Kanupriya beats ABVP's candidate to become first woman president of Panjab University students' council

Sep 6 (AZINS) The Students for Society (SFS), a left-leaning organisation, not affiliated with any political party, won the president’s post of the Punjab University Students’ Council election on Thursday by a margin of 719 votes.

Kanu Priya, a 22-year-old 2nd Year MSC student from the Zoology department won and became the first woman to be elected to the university’s post.

She is from Patti town in Punjab and her mother is a nurse while her father works in the private sector.

Student activist Gurmehar Kaur tweeted: "Congratulations Punjab University on electing your first female president! My heart soaaaars with pride."

The SFS got 2802 votes while BJP’s student union the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) came second with 2083 voters. Students Organisation of India (SOI) got 1997 votes. The Congress-backed NSUI got 1583 votes while NOTA got 209.

Daler Singh of ISA (SOI alliance) won the VP’s post, AMmarinder Singh of INSO (SOI alliance won the secretary’s post) and Vipul Atray of NSUI won votes for the joint secretary’s post.
