Australian Open 2019: In a shocker, Roger Federer knocked out by Stefanos Tsitsipas

Jan 20 (AZINS) Defending champion Roger Federer is out of the Australian Open 2019 after losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 20-year-old Greek beat Federer 7-6 (13-11) 6-7 (3-7) 5-7 6-7 (5-7) to move to his first ever grand slam quarterfinal on Sunday.

The match pitting the oldest and youngest players went on for three hours and 47 minutes of play. Federer failed to convert any of the 12 break points he took from Tsitsipas.

The Greek youngster, who has reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam twice in his last three appearances, enjoyed a breakthrough 2018 season as he lifted the NextGen Finals title to finish with a career-high ranking of 15.

The 37-year old Federer was looking to win a record seventh Australian Open title and also win his 100th singles title.

Tsitsipas will play 22nd-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the semi-finals.
