Gautam Adani, Torrent Group plan to spend Rs 12550 crore in order to buy majority stake in...

Ahead of IPL 2025, several media reports suggest that billionaire Gautam Adani is planning to acquire a majority stake in IPL franchise Gujarat Titans from CVC Capitals Partners.

CVC Capitals Partners, who acquired the Gujarat Titans for ?5,625 crore ($745 million) in 2021, are reportedly in talks with both Adani Group and Torrent Group for the sale of the franchise, according to The Economic Times.

One of the youngest teams in the IPL, Gujarat Titans boasts a whopping valuation between $1 billion to $1.5 billion (Rs 12550 crore approximately).

The team's spectacular performance and winning the IPL trophy in their debut season in 2022 contributed to this surge in valuation.

The lock-in period set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which prevents new teams from selling stakes, will end in February 2025.

Moreover, Adani has already invested in cricket by acquiring teams in the Women's Premier League (WPL) and the UAE-based International League T20. In 2023, Adani bought WPL's Gujarat Titans franchise with the highest bid of Rs 1,289 crore.

In 2021, Adani Group made a bid of Rs 5,100 crore in an attempt to secure the ownership of Gujarat Titans. The Torrent Group was also in the running, offering ?4,653 crore for the team. However, after an intense bidding war, Irelia Sports India, a branch of CVC Capitals, emerged victorious, claiming the team for themselves by outbidding all of their rivals.

In three years, Gujarat Titans led by Shubman Gill has become one of the strongest teams in the tournament. Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, Gujarat Titans won the IPL trophy in their first season in 2022.

This victory considerably increased the team's worth, further securing their position as one of the most valuable franchises in the cash-rich league.
