Google responds to third-party email snooping concernsAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
July 4 (AZINS) After it was discovered that third-party apps for Gmail were allegedly accessing users' private emails, Google has responded to the backlash.
The company has clarified through its blogpost that it does not scan emails to target ads, and the third-party apps are mandated to accurately represent themselves to request relevant data, Cnet reported. It goes on to declare that no one at Google reads the emails, except in cases where the user had granted the consent or when it is required as a security measure.
Third party apps allow users convenience, however, some of these apps for Google's Gmail service reportedly allowed their developers to read private mails.
One of these apps, Return Path, analyzes users' inboxes and collects data for marketers. Another app called Edison Software, allowed employees to read emails to train the smart reply feature, Cnet reported. The companies stress that they adhere to user agreements. Last year, Google promised to stop scanning emails for targeted ads.
Recently, Gmail rolled out a new feature that uses machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to know when to notify users about an email. Email notifications are a never-ending story for so many, cluttering the screen and distracting us, when most of the time they really aren't that urgent. And no, the answer is not to turn off notifications altogether, as that simply isn't an option for many.
What if there were a way to filter out the ‘it can wait' type of emails and only get an alert for the more important or urgent messages? Well, Google is attempting just that with its AI technology.
Gmail already offers the option to just get notified of emails that fall into the ‘Primary' category, however that may still invite a lot of pings. Now the app is rolling out a new way for iOS users to filter everything but ‘High-priority emails', therefore only getting alerted if emails are marked ‘important.'
