Shawn Mendes' performance started the night that was all uphill from there. Jennifer Lopez, who was bestowed the Video Vanguard award, charmed the crowd with her electric performance. Madonna's tribute to Aretha Franklin sparked cultural appropriation debate. Tiffany Haddish shaded Fifth Harmony while hailing Camila Cabello.
