Golden Globes 2019: Here are the champions!Jan 8 (AZINS) Kicking off the awards season, the Golden Globes saw a sea of film and television personalities make their way to the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Co-hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg opened the show, that had a number of surprise winners. The critics’ favourite A Star Is Born lost the Best Picture award to the musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. The Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper starrer that most people expected to win big, only got lucky in the Best Original Song category. Rami Malek shone, taking home the Best Actor in a drama film. Malek acknowledged the surviving Queen members and said, “Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous.” It was a victorious night too for Green Book that claimed three Globes — Best Screenplay, Best Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. Glenn Close was visibly surprised when she was selected for the Best Actress — Drama. While Christian Bale got Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for his role of former US Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice. In television, The Americans and The Assassination of Gianni Versace all received awards.

NOT WITHOUT MY PARENTS

Sandra Oh giving a shout out to her parents while accepting her Best Actress Drama award for Killing Eve was the ‘aww’ moment of the night. The actress said, “There are two people here that I’m so grateful that they’re here with me. I’d like to thank my mother and my father,” adding ‘I love you, mom and dad’ in Korean. Her mother started clapping incessantly as soon as her name was announced, whereas her father gave her a standing ovation.

ONE FOR THE WOMEN

Fans may have been disappointed to see Lady Gaga lose the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama to Glenn Close, but the veteran actress who completes 45 years of acting, gave an inspirational speech that was well received. Having won for her film The Wife, she spoke about her own mother and others saying, “Women we’re nurturers, that’s what’s expected of us, but we have to find personal fulfillment... We have to say ‘I can do that, and I should be allowed to do that. “

TWO TIMES THE CHARM

Rachel Brosnahan made history for being the first woman to win Best Actress in a comedy or musical category twice in a row for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. The actress gave a shout out to the mostly female-dominated team behind the series, adding, “Our village is a matriarchy.”

PLEDGE FOR GENDER EQUALITY

Regina King made an important promise while on stage to receive her Golden Globe for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. Taking forward last year’s Time’s Up movement, the actress  continued talking even as the music started playing in the background to say, “In the next two years, everything that I produce — I’m making a vow and it’s going to be tough — to make sure that everything that I produce is 50 per cent women.”

THE PROPOSAL

As a spoof of the proposal at the 2018 Emmys, when director Glenn Weiss asked his girlfriend Jan Svendsen to marry him, Maya Rudolph proposed to co-presenter Amy Poehler. She said, “I’m so sorry guys, I just, I have to do this. Amy, you’re the love of my life... You’ve always been there for me. Amy Geraldine Poehler, will you marry me?” She pulled out a box with a ring. Following a “Yes!” from Poehler, the two hugged on stage and then carried on with the nomination announcements.

INAUGURAL AWARD

Comedian Carol Burnett was presented with the first-ever Golden Globe recognising a lifetime career in television, which was named after her — The Carol Burnett award. The actress who has had a six-plus decade career dedicated her award “to all those who made my dreams come true and to all those out there who share the love I have for television.”

WHO’S THAT GIRL?

While the photogs went click happy as the stars made their way on the red carpet, there was one woman who stood out. Donning a blue dress and carrying a tray of Fiji water bottles, she managed to photobomb pictures of a number of actors. From Richard Madden to Kristin Cavallari and Idris Elba and fiancée Sabrina Dhowre, this woman managed to make her way into everyone’s picture frame. Was she hoping to get discovered by photobombing the celebs, we wonder.
