Bouldering: The secret to Aquaman’s physiqueAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
Feb 2 (AZINS) Aquaman and Captain Marvel belong to two different camps in the cinematic universe. However, they draw their superhuman strength from a common source — bouldering. Ditching the cape and rope, these superheroes scale a boulder for a total-body exercise that helps them strengthen their muscles. The Joker aka Jared Leto, too, developed a fascination for this intense physical activity that also keeps Baywatch hunk Zac Efron in stellar shape. Back home, Akshay Kumar follows this workout. Here’s looking at why bouldering has suddenly become Hollywood’s latest obsession.
About bouldering
Given the rugged nature of bouldering, it takes a certain physical and mental endurance. Jason has previously admitted to training in the wild as it keeps him mentally strong, while Jared chose to continue this form of rock climbing even after a near-death experience. He revealed, “I think it’s part of what makes me feel alive and I absolutely love it, it’s a huge part of my life.” Clearly, the risks outweigh the benefits for these stars who don’t mind giving it all to stay in shape. Through their Instagram posts, actors Zac and Brie Larson make bouldering look easy, and looking at the impressive results, we are not surprised it has piqued the curiosity of many out there. Here’s what you should know about it...
The Bollywood connect
Holistic Health guru Mickey Mehta says that this form of exercise requires one to use all four limbs and going up an incline. It serves as a complete body workout that builds strength not just in the larger muscle groups like chest, back and legs but also in smaller muscles like fingers and forearms. In addition, it helps build coordination and balance as well as improves one’s aerobic fitness. In addition to being a great physical workout, if done outdoors it is an excellent way of being one with nature. He adds, “I have seen Akshay Kumar, who is one of the fittest individuals of the Bollywood fraternity, practice bouldering.”
Pros and cons of bouldering
Mickey says, “Bouldering is an intense activity that requires core and upper body strength. It is a complete body workout, which is not only physically demanding but also mentally challenging. Though it can be explored by anyone at a beginner or intermediate level, the advance form of bouldering needs discipline and methodical practice. It prepares an individual to scale great heights and conquer difficult challenges while on the ascent.”
It’s not as easy as it appears
Mickey feels that one has to undertake the activity under extreme caution. “Bruising is very common. Also, there is always the risk of injuring oneself due to fall or improper landing. While one can explore bouldering under expert supervision, it is not recommended for people who are suffering or recovering from any injury or for those who are overweight as it may prove to be harder for them.”
Don’t treat it as a fad
Leena Mogre, fitness expert and director Leena Mogre’s Fitness cautions people against treating bouldering as a fad. She says, “Bouldering, in my opinion, is an adventurous sport. It’s meant for people who are into fitness actively. I would advise beginners who are interested in this sport to first get an assessment done at a beginner’s camp that has experts on board. You cannot afford to lose focus as that can prove to be harmful. Under the supervision of certified instructors, one can learn the basics in a gym. Extra padding, thick mats and a harness are generally advisable to protect you from any falls. As you progress you will be able to rely only on a harness.”
