'Captain Marvel' scores 3rd biggest opening in Chennai after Rajinikanth's 'Petta' and Ajith's 'Viswasam' in 2019Mar 11 (AZINS) The first female-led superhero film Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson has scored the third biggest opening of 2019 in Chennai city, only behind Superstar Rajinikanth's Petta and Thala Ajith's Viswasam. The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed MCU film has surpassed this week's local releases such as Boomerang and Sathru by raking in Rs 2.14 crore from the opening weekend ending on March 10.

The film has been earning steadily at the ticket windows with Rs 68 lakhs, Rs 72 lakhs, and Rs 74 lakhs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively. While the Karthik Subbaraj-helmed Petta and Siva directorial Viswasam grossed Rs 4.81 crore and Rs 3.83 crore respectively in their four-day opening weekend, Captain Marvel has hauled in Rs 2.14 crore in just three days.

Captain Marvel's Rs 2.14 opening weekend in Chennai is also the second-best for a Hollywood film in the city, only behind the global box-office behemoth Avengers: Infinity War which garnered Rs 2.48 crores in 3 days. Despite the avalanche of sexist trolls on the internet and lukewarm reviews from preview shows, Captain Marvel has been rocketing up records at the worldwide box-office and set the cash registers ringing with a massive $455 million opening weekend.

With Avengers: End Game scheduled for release in six weeks, the opening weekend numbers for Captain Marvel have provided the much-needed momentum for the next big leap.
