Oscars 2020: Kirk Douglas tribute is last-minute addition to Academy's In Memoriam sectionAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
US silver screen legend and one of the last survivors of the golden age of cinema Kirk Douglas passed away at the age of 103 on Wednesday. Kirk was the son of Jewish Russian immigrants who rose through the ranks to become one of Hollywood's biggest-ever star, renowned for the macho and not-always-likable tough guy roles he took on in around 90 movies over a six-decade career.
To honour his legacy, the Academy Awards have featured Kirk in their 'in memoriam' section as a last-minute addition. According to a report in Variety, the tributes that poured in from the film fraternity resulted in end moment edits to the 'In Memoriam' package to incorporate and pay tribute to the screen legend.
The organisation has come into question in 2019 when they failed to include Singin' in the Rain director Stanley Donen, Oscar-nominee Sondra Locke, and Oscar-nominee Carol Channing in the 'in memoriam' reel.
The news of Kirk's sad demise was announced by son Michael Douglas on Instagram. Sharing pictures of his father, Micheal in a heartfelt tribute wrote, "It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103. To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in setting a standard for all of us to aspire to. But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great-grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband. Kirk's life was well-lived, and he leaves a legacy in the film that will endure for generations to come and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son. #KirkDouglas."
