Phoenix, AZ-A consortium of community-based-organizations are rallying in support of Valley police chiefs who spoke out against efforts to make local police departments enforce immigration law. Last Monday Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris, along with other Valley police chiefs, spoke out against immigration enforcement movement.
The consortium consisting of Chicanos Por La Causa, Asian-Hispanic Alliance, Tonatierra, Greater Phoenix Urban League, National Council of La Raza, Friendly House, Japanese-American Citizens League, Valle Del Sol, League of United Latin-American Citizens, Raza Development Fund and the Asian Chamber of Commerce, are holding a press conference Monday morning at 10:30AM located at Cesar Chavez Plaza (across from Phoenix City Hall).
According to Mesa Police Chief George Gascon, in the city of Mesa, Hispanics both legal and illegal, commit only about one quarter of crimes, exactly proportionate to their segment of the population as a whole. The consortium agrees with the police leaders that enforcement of immigration laws will divert resources from more pressing needs. Focusing resources on one segment of the population is not only an ineffective allocation of resources at reducing crime; it may also lead to racial profiling targeting innocent Americans.
