COVID-19 second wave: Farhan Akhtar organises food donation programme, distributes 1000 thalis dailyThe second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the country hard and has left people in distress. Many celebrities are coming forward to help people in need during these troubled times.

The most recent to join ranks is actor Farhan Akhtar who has been organising food donation programmes for COVID-19 affected families and their caregivers in Uttar Pradesh.

Farhan is working with an NGO called ‘Hope For Welfare Trust’ and where his donations are being used to feed patients and caregivers in affected by the deadly disease.

Away from the media limelight, Farhan’s donations are not only being used to feed the virus infected patients, but also the people working at Harishchandra and Manikarnika shamshan ghats in Varanasi.

Diyanshu Upadhyay, secretary of the NGO said that Farhan has always stood by them in times of need, and they are grateful for his contribution this time.

"Eight of us from the Hope team have been distributing 1000 thalis every day in the city. Each thali has rice, dal, roti, sabzi, salad and biscuits. If we distribute lunch to the hospitals during the day, at night, we focus on the cremation grounds,” Upadhyay said.

Diyanshu reached out to Farhan through social media when Uttar Pradesh witnessed a surge in cases and received a prompt response by the actor, who was ready to help. Last year, the ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ actor distributed 1000 PPE kits for the Healthcare workers of government hospitals.

In a joint statement, the makers of Farhan Akhtar-starrer Toofan announced on Monday via social media that the release date of the boxing drama has been postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19.

India is battling the second wave of COVID-19 which has turned out to be far more deadlier than the first wave. With lakhs of cases being reported, people have been left stranded across the nation, fighting for medical supplies like oxygen cylinders, hospitals beds, medicines etc. At times like these, every contribution made towards the welfare and aid of people counts.
