'Indian Idol' winner Abhijeet Sawant slams reality shows, says tragic stories are shown instead of talent‘Indian Idol’ has been in the headlines for a while now and for all the wrong reasons. Now, Abhijeet Sawant, the winner of ‘Indian Idol 1’ has said that these days, makers of reality shows are more concerned about poverty-stricken, tragic and sad stories of contestants than their talents.

Comparing regional music reality shows to mainstream music reality shows like ‘Indian Idol’, Sawant in an interview to Aaj Tak said, “If you look at the regional reality shows, then the audience will hardly know about the background of the contestants. Their focus is only on singing, but in Hindi reality shows, the tragic and sad stories of contestants are redeemed. The focus is only on that.”

Talking about his own days, Sawant said that once he forgot the lyrics of a song while performing on stage for Indian Idol and stopped singing. The judges then collectively decided to give him another chance. He adds that if something like this happened in today’s time, it would have been shown in a dramatic “TV-style” way.

Speaking on the Kishore Kumar episode controversy, Sawant said, "It is unfair to compare any singer with Kishore Kumar. All singers have their own style and are free to pay a tribute in their own unique way.”

Recently, in a Kishore Kumar tribute special episode of ‘Indian Idol 12’, the performance of judges, Anu Malik, Himesh Reshammiya and Neha Kakkar didn't go well with the netizens, who slammed the three for their singing. Later, Kishore Kumar’s son Amit Kumar revealed that he ‘didn't enjoy the episode at all’ and ‘wanted it to stop’.
