'Harry Potter' star David Ryall deadLondon, Dec 28 (AZINS) British actor David Ryall, best known for playing Elphias Doge in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1” , died at the age of 79.

He died on Christmas Thursday. “Sherlock” writer and actor Mark Gatiss confirmed the news on social media Saturday, reports variety.com.

“The great David Ryall left us on Christmas Day. A twinkling, brilliant, wonderful actor I was privileged to call a friend. RIP,” Gatiss tweeted.

Ryall's daughter and actress Charlie Ryall, also confirmed the news by tweeting: “Please take a moment to remember his huge five-decade-spanning career outside of the more well-known TV & film. Not just Harry Potter".

David appeared in various films including “City of Ember”, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “The Elephant Man”.

He replaced Peter Cartwright as Doge in 2010’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.”

Most recently, he acclaimed recognition on the small screen as Frank - the grandfather who suffers from dementia - in the BBC comedy “Outnumbered”.

His well remembered TV roles also include those in “The Village” and “The Singing Detective.”

The actor began his career on the stage before becoming popular on British TV.

He is survived by his son - music manager Jonathan Ryall, and two daughters - singer Imogen Ryall and actress Charlie.
