In a tell-all piece, one from his personal diary, Jaffrey shared how he had wronged his first wife Mehrumina by not willing to accept her the way she was. He reminisces that he walked, talked and behaved like a certain way which was starkly different from the way his first wife Mehrunima behaved. Despite repeated attempts to change her, when she didn't change, the character actor fell in love with his co-actor who was more like he was in real life.

But panic struck when he realised that his second wife was more interested about her herself, the way she behaved and looked rather than being caring and affectionate towards him, the qualities that his first wife possessed.

6-7 years into his second marriage, Jaffrey came across an article of some Madhur Jaffrey who, in fact was his first wife Mehrunima. The actor identified her and went to US to meet her.
