From Junior's Desk: News that caught the attention of schoolchildrenAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
Mumbai, Nov 15(AZINS) Approximately 450 schools, 40,000 registered participants and over 15,000 entries — dna's Junior Editor competition received an overwhelming response (despite school exams) from across Mumbai. Students from classes V to X, in schools from Churchgate to Virar, VT to Panvel and Kalyan and Ambernath, enthusiastically filled up the eight-page (front page, dnaofmumbai, fanfare, commercial creation, comic world, clones and drones, dnaofsports, and pennywise) blank tabloid with topics provided by dna's editorial team. Here's bringing you vignettes of the kids' entries.
My Maggi
Who do you think would have been most disappointed with the ban on Maggi? Children, of course. Everyone's favourite noodles were on their minds, which was why the kids' front pages gladly announced that 'Maggi had cleared all tests' and would soon be back in the market. Some reports also talked about the drop in Maggi's net profit in those dark days, when it was found that Maggi contained excessive amounts of lead, while others talked about its plan to win back consumer trust.
People of interest
Abdul Kalam, Sheena Bora, Saina Nehwal – these were people who caught the attention of children. From reports about his death to No School Bag Day, our former president late APJ Abdul Kalam clearly stole the hearts of our kids (approximately 90% of the reports were on him).
But Sheena Bora was not far from their thoughts either. The front pages of Junior Editor saw headlines and full-page stories on the 'Sheena murder case' as our junior journalists demanded to know who killed Sheena Bora.
Sports stars like Saina Nehwal, Sania Mirza and Virender Sehwag also found significant mention.
Space cadets
Reaching for the stars is precisely what the children are doing! Space missions, new discoveries and ISRO's successful launch are still fresh in their minds. The junior editors reported about India's success in launching its first space observatory, the discovery of Earth's 'older brother' Kepler-452b, evidence of water on Mars and even claims of a giant statue of Gautam Buddha spotted on the red planet.
Matters of concern
"Drought in June, experts worry about May 2016" reads one headline. "Schools to train girls in self-defence", reads another. Kids are concerned about these and many more issues. Earthquakes, the migrant crisis and farmer suicides were some of the other stories reported on by them, as were the dangers of people risking their lives for the 'perfect selfie'.
Political world
From news on PM Narendra Modi to party reactions on the beef ban, who said children aren't interested in politics? Republic Day celebrations, government initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana, stands on the beef ban, the Dadri lynching, Sudheendra Kulkarni's face-blackening incident and the cancellation of Ghulam Ali's concert all made it to the front page. Uddhav Thackeray's address at the Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park in Mumbai also made the headlines, as did the government's distribution of two crore LED bulbs.
