'Revenant' director Inarritu leads top category for Directors Guild AwardsAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
London, Jan 13(AZINS) Filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is aiming for a second consecutive win at the Directors Guild Of America Awards (DGA) after earning a 2016 nomination for The Revenant.
The Mexican filmmaker, 52, fresh off his best director win at the Golden Globes, is up for the prestigious outstanding directorial achievement in feature film prize he took home last year for Birdman, reported Contactmusic.
He will face off against four-time nominee Ridley Scott, who has won acclaim for The Martian, and first-timers George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), and Adam McKay (The Big Short).
The eventual winner will be given a big Oscars boost as the DGA champ typically goes on to repeat their success at the Academy Awards - as Inarritu did in 2015.
The nominees for outstanding directorial achievement of a first-time feature are: Joel Edgerton for The Gift; Alex Garland for Ex Machina; A Wolf at the Door's Fernando Coimbra; The Diary of a Teenage Girl's Marielle Heller, and Laszlo Nemes for Son of Saul, which claimed the best foreign language film honour at the Globes.
