Love at first tweet: A Twitter love story for Valentine’s DayAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
Feb 13(AZINS) When Mihir Bijur, a 35-year-old music enthusiast started hashtag #EMBEE in 2010, at a time when Twitter was just gaining momentum in India, never did he think that it would lead him to meet the love of his life online. The hashtag was a list of music recommendations by Twitter users that came with a link to hear/watch the recommended song which Mihir would religiously send out every day.
One such tweet which Mihir sent out recommended Scarborough, by Simon and Garfunkel in April 2010. Soon, Sulbha Arora, a Nova IVF specialist and gynaecologist replied to his tweet saying that even her 5-year-old niece enjoyed the song. “And since then, there was no looking back,” recalls Mihir.
“We followed each other on Twitter and got chatting. Soon, we exchanged our BB pins, BlackBerrys were huge back then,” says Mihir. In a few months’ time, Mihir and Sulbha met in a suburban café but there was no awkwardness for they were already too familiar to feel the jitters.
Mihir says, “It was December 2010 when I was sure that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. Our online chemistry was very strong and it obviously poured into our personal meetings and that led me to get down on my knee, asking her to marry me. Though not quite literally, it all happened over lunch and champagne and we were engaged. However, looking back, I do wish I could have made it more special and grander.”
“Coming from two completely different worlds, me a communications professional, her a doctor, yet the same interests that we shared pulled us together and, fortunately, we have stayed that way for a long time now. We got married in July next year,” reveals Mihir who feels that Twitter as a means of connecting has changed. Where once it was a platform to connect, it is now a platform to ‘outrage’. However, he has a strong opinion that one actually cannot fake it for too long on the internet, “Even though it’s been just six years, connectivity has reached far corners of the country and it won’t take long to figure out if one is a fake.”
The couple today steers clear of too much tweeting but are immensely thankful to Simon and Garfunkel for bringing them together.
