Kalabhavan Mani's death: Insecticide residues found in actor's body; brother suspects foul playAuthor : AZIndia News Desk
Mar 18(AZINS) In a new twist in noted south Indian actor Kalabhavan Mani's death, a highly dangerous insecticide has been found in his viscera samples. Mani's samples had been sent to the Regional Chemical Examiner's Laboratory at Kakkanad in Kochi for testing after his death on March 6 and the report came out today.
The 'very dangerous' insecticide 'Chlorpyrifos' was found in the samples, Joint Chemical Examiner, K Muralidharan Nair, told PTI. Methyl and Ethyl alcohol contents were also found in the actor's samples, he said.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday said that the government was prepared to order a comprehensive probe in the matter. Chandy told reporters in Kasaragod that if the actor's family sought a probe, government was prepared to order a high level inquiry. However, he maintained that the present probe was going in the right direction. "Government will take a decision after getting to know the views of the family on the issue," he said.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said the DGP has been asked to conduct a foolproof probe. "All new revelations will be inquired into..the inquiry report will soon be submitted in court," he added. Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes President Innocent also sought a probe and said the guilty should not be spared.
45-year-old Kalabhavan Mani, known for his award-winning performance in Vasantiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njanum, was undergoing treatment for liver and kidney diseases at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) for some time when he died. Police had registered a case of unnatural death after AIMS doctors told police that traces of methyl alcohol was found in his blood. Some people are being questioned by police.
"I never knew that Mani had any sort of serious liver ailments," the actor's widow, Nimmy, told the media on Thursday. Nimmy told reporters "we have doubts in his death." She rubbished reports that there were some family problems. "There were no family problems. You can ask anyone. There were no issues between us", she told reporters.
Asked if the actor had any enemies, she replied in the negative. Since some of his friends had gathered at the outhouse 'Padi', they would have encouraged him to have liquor, she said. "Mani chettan will not commit suicide. He had all the luxury now," she said about the actor, who had risen to great heights in South Indian films from humble beginnings.
Mani's younger brother RLV Ramakrishnan, said there were awaiting the chemical lab reports and would file a complaint after that. On Thursday, Mani's brother told Malayalam Manorama that he suspected foul play in connection with the actor's death.
Ramakrishnan told the publication, "I suspect all those who had kept Mani company the day before he died... Mani's aides had tried to destroy evidence. The place was cleaned of liquor before anyone from the from the family arrived at the spot... There were no issue's in Mani's family life. It is also a matter of suspicion that how traces of methyl alcohol was detected in Mani's body."
On Thursday, the police had questioned TV anchor Sabumon Abdusamad and some close aides of the late actor—Srun Vipin and Murukan— who were with him shortly before his death.
