According to a statement given to The Journal.ie by David Moore of Astronomy Ireland, the sighting of Jupiter and Moon together is due to a “line-of-sight” effect. In reality, the distance of Jupiter from the Earth is almost 2,000 times further away than the Moon!

The two celestial bodies will appear to closest to each-other tonight and almost as close tomorrow night as well. Astronomers and star-gazers across the globe have a rare opportunity to witness a rather rare phenomenon.

Moore believes that this is one of the most impressive sightings of the Moon, in combination with another celestial body. He believes that this will be “one of the most spectacular events visible to the general public during 2016?.
