10 things you didn't know about 'Whiplash'May 10(AZINS) Since time immemorial, the relationship between a teacher and student has been the focal point of countless debates and discussion. Directed and written by Damien Chazelle 'Whiplash' follows the story of Miles Teller, an aspiring jazz drummer and his ruthless music instructor, J. K. Simmons and devotes most of its swift, nerve-racking runtime annihilating each emotional cliché of this relationship.

A film that treads a fine line between the genres of thriller and music, Whiplash is a roller coaster ride that follows the journeys of Andrew, a confident drummer and promising student and Fletcher, the drumming coach from hell who pushes his student until they are either the best of the best in his eyes or immaterial to him. Andrew one of the seemingly fortunate ones to have the privileged tutelage of Fletcher, realises before long that the legendary teacher is something out of every students worst nightmare who uses the first day with the group to toss abuses (and some furniture) and set his pupils against each other in a rash attempt to entice the potentially capable and eliminate the less fortunate.

J K Simmons won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2014 for his wonderful performance in this movie. It went on to win a total of 52 awards and 117 nominations and over $13 million at the worldwide box office with a production budget of $3.3 million. This is a story that will strike a chord with not just parents but even kids.

10 things you didn't know about this film:

1. The entire film was shot in 19 days.

2. All of Miles Tellers (lead) characters drumming was performed by Teller himself and 40% of his drumming was used in the original soundtrack.

3. The film is one of the lowest grossing movies ever to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

4. Both J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller have portrayed comic book characters in a Marvel film. Simmons as Jay Johan Jameson (Spiderman 2002) and Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Fantastic Four 2015).

5. J.K. Simmons has won 47 awards as his role in Fletcher.

6. J.K. Simmons suffered two cracked ribs when Miles Teller tackled him during the last two days of shooting. Simmons managed to continue working despite his injury.

7. The film is adapted from Chazelle's 2013 short film of the same name. JK Simmons plays the same role in both.

8. During the more intense practice scenes, the director wouldn't yell, "cut!" so that Miles Teller would keep drumming until he exhausted himself.

9. J.K. Simmons stated his character, Fletcher, calling Andrew (Miles Teller) a "self-righteous little prick" was the only line he improvised.

10. Miles Teller has a roman-numeral tattoo of the number 32 that represents the 32-ounce beers his high school friends and he had as 40-ounce beers were not available in Florida.

You can catch 'Whiplash' on the 14th May on Star Movies Select HD.
